Design a Shaduf
The Primary 5 children were Ancient Egyptian design engineers for the afternoon. They were able to design and test their own shaduf. The shaduf was an early tool used in irrigation by the ancient Egyptians who lived along the Nile River. It was used to lift water from a river or lake onto land or into another river or lake. The pupils investigated the function of the shaduf and looked closely at how they were built, before constructing their own functional shadufs in small groups. They were able to test their designs and make changes. They were able to make suggestions on why it didn't work and make the changes. The children thoroughly enjoyed the project.
