Today we conducted an experiment to investigate how animals stay warm in polar regions. We had to put our hands into a bowl of ice water and time how long we could manage before the cold became too much. Then we put lard and plastic gloves onto our hands. After, we put our hands in the ice water again and timed how long we could keep it in there for. We managed much longer with the lard and plastic glove! This is because the lard acted like the blubber keeping animals, such as polar bears, warm in freezing conditions.
